What is Qigong?

Qigong (pronounced “chee gong”) originated in ancient China, and its roots date back thousands of years. The exact moment that qigong came into being and who invented it as a practice is lost in the mists of antiquity. However, it is believed to have emerged from ancient Chinese shamanic practices. Shaman's would "dance" while channelling the spirit of a particular animal for hunting purposes but also to imbue themselves with the qualities of the animals being emulated. Eventually these dances would be catalogued into teachable exercises.

Qigong features exercises to optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit, with the goal of improving and maintaining health and well-being, as well as enhancing spirituality. Qigong has both psychological and physical components and involves the regulation of the mind, breath, and body’s movement and posture.

What is Qi?

Qi is the Chinese name for the concept of the Universal consciousness that permeates and animates all living things. It also provides the force behind the movement of the stars and the planets, the growth of trees and the flow of rivers. The term Qi implies a natural living intelligent energy with the potential to produce positive change within our bodies, mind and spirit if it is correctly cultivated, in flow and in harmony.

We cannot typically see or hear Qi, but we can sense it in different ways, and we can experience the effects that it produces, in the same way that we can feel the wind, and the rays of the Sun. We can learn to feel Qi, which typically takes some practice, and how it can be felt varies in many different ways depending on many factors. If one’s Qi is well developed though, there are several tangible attainments that we can aspire to, which includes good posture, a present and attentive mind, a positive personal power, and a sense of virtuous wisdom. These attributes come from abundant harmonised Qi.
