What can you expect from a mentor such as Steve?
Someone who listens, doesn't judge, and can be truly impartial. You can talk through ideas and aspirations, and help you come to a conclusion.
Someone who can clear the 'weeds' of the beliefs that limit you, and get you moving towards a goal with steps that you agree to, even if this might be slightly uncomfortable at times. Growth and action don't live in our comfort zone! A great mentor will challenge you to become the best you can possibly become.
Steve is open, honest, approachable, and friendly. He is someone you can speak with in total confidence, and has a lot of valuable knowledge, experience, and a few contacts, whom can help you towards achieving your goals and dreams.
Someone who can protect you from some mistakes, encourage you, empower you, and help you navigate gently to make you feel you are not alone on this journey.
Nikoleta was looking for new work in June 2020 but was having difficulties securing interviews. We worked on her CV, and arranged some remote telephone interviews until she secured a great position!
I first met the very impressive Zoe doing some school interviews, and have started trying to help her in 2020 updating her CV and providing a sounding board for career related decisions.
I met Jasper in 2019 and worked with him in preparing for a career change. He provided me with a very nice LinkedIn recommendation!
"Steve helped me tremendously. I was a career changer struggling to find a developer job in the IT industry. He offered help; from CV revision and mock job interview. I have secured countless interviews after our meeting and finally received a fantastic job offer! I could not have accomplished this without his thorough guidance. Steve is truly an exception. Thank you for all that you do."
I met Annalisa through the University of Essex in 2018. She was looking for some help in deciding whether to enter the world of work or to continue in academia. She gave me a lovely LinkedIn recommendation as follows
"Steve is very kind and keen to support in any way possible. Not only has he helped me in the decision-making process of entering working life or pursuing an academic career, but also revised my CV and set me up with his business contacts. Moreover, he offered to prepare me for job interviews. I couldn't ask for anything more."
I worked with Karen a part of the University of Essex mentoring programme. We worked on the business she is starting, and also on finding Data work whilst that was starting to trade.
I am currently working with Temi in 2022 to help him with his CV and interview techniques, again as part of the University of Essex mentoring program
I worked with Greg very briefly as he was at a crossroads in career terms, in terms of having multiple roles open to him, and he needed a bit of guidance (and permission mainly!) to decide which way he wanted to go.
He wrote me a very kind LinkedIn recommendation "Steve has provided me with excellent advice and guidance, and he has helped me to identify a number of goals and objectives that I've wanted to achieve throughout my career."
I met Leyla through the University of Essex. She was kind enough to provide me with a LinkedIn recommendation as follows:
"I had already secured a job, for after graduation, however I was unsure about whether it was the right fit for me and wanted some guidance. Steve helped me to build my confidence and helped me to decide what my plan should be. He organised lots of opportunities for me to gain more of an insight into different industries, which was exceptionally useful!"
I also met Mirriam through the University of Essex mentoring programme. She wrote me this lovely recommendation:
"Steve is an enthusiastic, thoughtful and active listener who is passionate about helping students as they navigate career paths and prospects. During the program, through resume reviews, interview preps, coaching sessions and initiating connections with other professionals in the field, Steve helped boost my confidence on taking the next steps in my career."
